task versus client

I've been working on my latest placement for the last week and a day. This placement is based at main theatres.

So far it's been interesting. I'm struggling not to shout out "I don't like it" because I think that I'm certainly learning a lot from it. So it's not all bad.

It's a very different approach to nursing care. It's very task orientated i.e. the patients come to the theatre and although each of their procedures is individual the same tasks are carried out for each patient. For example; we have the pre-op check lists, the name bands and the consent forms - all checked with patient and against documentation within the holding bay. Patients are then taken to anaesthetic room where they are monitored - heart, oxygen, bp, etc... The patient is anaesthetised and taken in for procedure...hopefully it all goes without a hitch and the patient is out to recovery, back on the ward, monitored....discharged.

I don't think it's possible to be very client orientated in the theatre situation as it is in the wards. It's a highly technical and medical orientated area with not much room for mistakes.

So there it's not been too bad, I've learned this and I've learned that this is an area where I have no interest in working. I've learned that I like the patients and I like learning about them and talking with them.

I hope that I remember all I've learned here as it's good to see what the other teams do and how life is made easier for all by remembering what expectations they have from other teams when dealing with patients and documentation.

Did that make any sense?
