We went into town today to spend the day with my partners mum. We went to the Ashmolean Museum first and what a horror met our eyes. The museum has undergone a new build and opened end of last year. This was our first opportunity to see the newly renovated museum.
The original museum began exhibiting in the 1620's and merged in 1920 with the University Art Collection to form the present day Ashmolean. It was always a beautiful building, a perfect setting for the exhibits.
The newly built parts are very different from the older building. It appears to be comprised of concrete, steel and glass. It is almost Ikea like in its way in the cold clean lines. There was no joy nor beauty in it and I fail to see how anyone could enjoy the exhibits within such surroundings.
When we asked for directions to the new restaurant the woman behind the help desk told us if we were lazy we could take the lift to the 4th floor. She recommended that we use the stairs so we could appreciate the newly built museum. So we took the lift. An obnoxious woman who attempted to make us feel insignificant with her haughty tone and attitude. As there were no tables free at the restaurant we took the stairs down and as my partner said, we should have stayed in the lift so we could have been spared the hideous views.
We will not be in any rush to return to the Ashmolean. What a great disappointment.
