Overland Trip - Cape Cross

When we arrived at Cape Cross we had been warned that the smell would be unforgettable but I don't think I was quite prepared for it. The smell composed of the urine and faeces of the thousands of Cape fur seals that lived there and also the unfortunate smell of fish and rotting corpses of the baby seals that did not survive their infancy. It was an unforgettable experience to see. The noise of the babies crying out for their mums and the mums in turn crying out for their babies.

This first little chap had gotten a bit lost and had found himself on the board walk. I tried herding him back to the sand but he didn't seem to understand, bless him. So I picked him up and placed him back with all the other babies. I did try to touch him as little as possible as I did not wish to make things worse for him.

Many of those babies you see in the picture above are unfortunately dead. So very sad to see.
