Sat in A&E at MK Hospital. Kerriisst! What a joyless place. Reception staff are either trying very hard, or it is an inevitable change to their personalities, to be as unwelcoming and unhelpful as possible. Mind you considering the rudeness and general level of intelligence of many of the other people that are waiting here I would probably find myself turning into something similar. But what I don't understand is if you are working in a highly emotive and potentially stressful environment why would you use such a defensive accusatory tone to every person who comes in seeking emergency services? Surely that in itself would increase the potential for heightened responses?
Another thing we have both noticed since sitting here is the number of people who are overweight make up most of the people, and children, who are attending A&E this evening. At the busiest time there were approximately thirty people here and every one of them were obese. How utterly depressing.
